Budgeting, Haiti, and Chili

So, I'm growing up, I guess... I'm slowly discovering the world of self-reliance... of course, if I were fully submerged into a life of self-reliance I would no longer have a car or a cell phone, each of which are equally important, as I'm sure you'd agree. I can still remember when my mom encouraged (forced) me to apply for my very first job at Fritz's (Fred's) Frozen Custard, now known as Paradise something or another. The memory of having my mom drop me off for my first interview (I was 15 *cough-AUBREY-cough*) will forever be engraved in my memory. Here is a tid bit of what I can recall...
I'm sitting here looking blankly at this piece of paper that is asking me about where I've gone to school and my past work experience. I can't figure out if I'm to put all 27.5 schools that I attended while living in Georgia, how am I supposed to remember all of those addresses, and does babysitting and mowing lawns count as work experience? Oh yea, and I'm pretty sure I'm a citizen, right mom? Thank goodness for mom's. She helped fill out the application and answer all those tough questions. She even gave me an idea for what to write at the very end where they give you some extra lines to write anything else you'd like. "Tell them you love ice cream!" So, I put the finishing touches on my first application and next thing I know I'm sitting at the desk of the Fritz's owner listening as he gives me a 30min lecture about how it's not ice cream, it's frozen custard! duhh... Thank goodness for mom's, huh?... haha.

Well, all I really wanted to write was that I found an excel template online yesterday for a monthly budget and I had too much fun filling it out for February. I've just been thinking a lot about how blessed I am to have the jobs I do and that got me to thinking about my first job. I really think budgeting will help me to be more conscious of where I'm spending my money and at the end of the month I'll be able to tell where I'm overspending. It even has all the formulas already logged in so when you put in what you actually spent it subtracts it from your budget and turns red if you went over! How cool is that?! Ahh, it's the little things in life that make me smile!

Click here for a link to the template I used! It's free!

On to the next.... Haiti.

There are so many people around the world and in our own country who need help in many different ways. Sometimes I feel guilty for not offering more of myself to humanity. With the devastating tragedy in Haiti has come the opportunity for me and everyone to HELP. There is no excuse for any of us to say, "I want to help, but how can I make a difference?" or "Well, I'm just a poor college student, there isn't much I have to offer." Haiti needs our help and it is absolutely our responsibility to do that in anyway we can. I know there are campuses and organizations across the country that are trying to raise money for Haiti in many different ways. If you feel that you have nothing to offer of material, offer your prayers. Pray for our Haitian brothers and sisters that they might find moments of peace through their devastation and loss. Many of you may have watched the "Hope for Haiti Now" telethon where many different artists performed in hopes to raise money. If you saw it and loved the performances, all of which were powerful and moving, or if you didn't get a chance to tune in... go buy the album on iTunes for $8 bucks! That's it... 20 songs for 8 dollars! All the proceeds will go to helping Haiti. Again, the most valuable thing we have to offer is prayer.

Lastly, the reason I decided to even post anything to my dusty blog was because last night I made homemade chili and I enjoyed cooking so much and was so proud of how it turned out that I wanted to post a picture of the creation! Click here for the recipe! It was so delicious and I had leftovers today and they were even better!

Twenty-One Years Completed!

I'll never forget my 21st birthday. I had the chance to go to Salt Lake and attend General Conference at the Conference Center. It was amazing. There were so many different people there of different nationalities. I went with my aunt and cousins to a session on Saturday and Sunday. My aunt went early and stood outside asking for tickets and she got plaza tickets for the second session that we went to! Which is one of the sessions that President Monson spoke at! He is such a great man, and it was as blessing to be in his presence. It was a blessing to be with all the people there.
When I talked to my parents on my birthday they both told me what they were doing on their 21st birthdays. My dad was on his mission in California and had the chance to baptize a family on his birthday, while my mom was pregnant with ME on her birthday! Ha! I can't even imagine having a baby right now. My parents are so amazing. I like the way I got to spend my 21st birthday.

Is It Really Summer Again?

Wow, time is flying! I received an email and picture from some of my friends in New York yesterday and it's so hard for me to believe this time last year I was moving there! I didn't know anyone besides my aunt and uncle when I moved to New York, but I left with lifetime friends that I will never forget. I can't wait to see them again!

Last summer was an amazing experience living in a big city and this summer I am doing quite the opposite! I'm staying in Southern Utah, but moved to a small town named Hurricane, which is about 20 minutes from St. George. I moved in with my friend and teammate, Brandi, and her family. When I look outside the first thing I see are cows, horses, then lots of mountains and red sand. Oh, gotta love the desert! It's quite a change from my surroundings last summer, but I have to say, I think I'm a country girl at heart. I enjoy the wide open spaces and being able to see the stars and moon every night. Both the city life and country life have a lot of offer and I'm thankful to have been able to experience both! Who knows where I'll end up next summer!? Spain? hehe, I wish.
